During the 2000s, Kitchee was the second most popular club in Hong Kong. The team went through a difficult period, but eventually returned to the top tier. In 2003, Kitchee was managed by Chan Hung Ping, a former Hong Kong national manager. Since then, the team has been managed by ten different managers. The club gained international recognition during the 2005 season, under Serbian manager Dejan Antonic.

Since then, the team has been dominant in the Hong Kong football league without reaching the top level in continental football. This year, the club intends to make further strides by playing in the AFC Champions League. Kitchee has been supported by government funding and the Hong Kong Football Association.

Their history was often reflected in the back pages of the newspapers in Hong Kong. Despite the tough times, they had a huge fan base and were an historic member of the league.
